Morocco finished top of the medals standings for the kyorugi portion of the African Taekwondo Championships in Kigali.

Athletes from Morocco left Rwanda with eight gold medals, three silver and four bronze, with seven of those titles coming in women’s divisions.

Sanaa Bayza at under-67 kilograms, Safia Salah at under-62kg, Nada Laaraj at under-57kg, Oumaïma Bouchti at under-53kg, Nezha Lasal at under-49kg, under-46kg’s Soukaïna Saheb and Fatima Zahra Aboufaras in the over-73kg category all won African titles for Morocco.

Under-63kg fighter Abdelbasset Ouasfi was the sole Moroccan man to win a kyorugi gold medal at BK Arena.

Egypt placed second in the medals standings and Ivory Coast third.

Ex-world champion and two-time Olympic medallist Ruth Gbagbi was one of two Ivorian winners, triumphing in the women’s under-67kg.

Among the Egyptian medallists was Ahmad Rawy, who overcame Ivorian Rio 2016 gold medallist Cheick Sallah Cissé in the men’s under-87kg final.

Morocco also won the most medals across all disciplines.
