World number one couple Katja Stam and Raïsa Schoon were left shocked as they exited the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour event in Gstaad in the pool stage after suffering a second loss.

The pair from The Netherlands lost 21-17 22-20 to Brazilians Tainá Silva Bigi and Victoria Lopes in the women’s competition.

They finished bottom of Pool H.

World number fours Eduarda Santos Lisboa and Ana Patrícia Ramos of Brazil partnered to defeat Finland’s Niina Ahtiainen and Taru Lahti-Liukkonen 21-14, 21-14 to finish Pool E with two wins from two.

Swiss Olympians Tanja Hüberli and Nina Brunner overcame Brazil’s Taiana Lima and Hegeile Almeida dos Santos 21-15, 17-21, 15-8 to top Pool A.

In the men’s event, Brazilian Olympic champion Bruno Schmidt and compatriot Saymon Barbosa, who finished second in Pool C, defeated Italian pair Paolo Nicolai and Samuele Cottafava 18-21, 21-14,15-9 ion the round of 24.

Olympians Esteban Grimalt and Marco Grimalt of Chile also made it past the round of 24, bettering Brazilians Evandro Goncalves and Álvaro Filho 21-16, 21-18.

The Chileans had finished second in Pool D.

The competition is due to continue tomorrow.
