Switzerland’s Matthias Kyburz and Sweden’s Tove Alexandersson made history by becoming the first-ever winners of the respective men's and women’s knockout sprint titles at the World Orienteering Championships.

The races were held on challenging terrain around the centre of Danish city Fredericia as orienteers had to come through quarter-finals and semi-finals to be in with a chance of a medal.

After helping Sweden win the sprint relay in Kolding last Sunday (June 26), Alexandersson emerged victorious again.

The Swede did not put a foot wrong and crossed the finish line in a winning time of 8min 0.9sec to clinch her 11th straight world title and 17th in total.

Megan Carter-Davies, who fought valiantly to secure Britain a sprint relay silver, was second behind Alexandersson once again, finishing in 8:24.

There was just six seconds between Davies and fifth-placed Simona Aaebersold of Switzerland as Dutchwoman Eaf van Dongen sealed bronze in 8:25 ahead of Sweden’s Sara Hagström.

The race for the men’s title was gripping as New Zealand’s Tim Robertson attempted to break away on different route choices only to miss out on a medal.

Kyburz clinched gold when he sprinted home in 7:19, pipping Sweden’s August Mollen by just one second.

Jonatan Gustafsson was another Swede to land a place on the podium as he clocked 7:24, seeing off challenges from Robertson and France’s Loic Capbern.

Competition is due to conclude with the men’s and women’s individual sprint qualification rounds and finals in Vejle on Thursday (June 30).
