Women’s top seeds Germany suffered a surprise defeat as the knockout stages of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3x3 World Cup got underway in Antwerp, Belgium.

Germany were defeated 22-13 by 13th seeds Canada in the last 16, with the Canadians following up that victory by overcoming the United States 14-10.

That left second seeds France as the highest ranked in the competition, and after breezing past Mongolia 21-9 in the last 16, they edged past Spain 15-14.

Third seeds Poland were also eliminated in the last eight, as they were beaten 19-16 by Lithuania.

China completed the semi-final line-up as they overcame hosts Belgium 21-13.

Earlier in the other last 16 encounters Lithuania beat fifth seeds The Netherlands 19-10, while Belgium overcame Brazil 15-9.

In the semi-finals, Lithuania are set to take on Canada while China are scheduled to face France.

In the men’s quarter-finals, top seeds Serbia defeated Tokyo 2020 Olympics gold medallists Latvia 22-17, while hosts Belgium overcame Poland 18-14.

Second seeds Lithuania beat reigning champions the US 21-11, while France beat The Netherlands 18-12.

Earlier in the last 16 Latvia overcame Germany 21-12, while Poland beat Mongolia 20-17.

France beat Austria 19-13, while the US edged past New Zealand by the narrowest of margins 21-20.

In the semi-finals Serbia are scheduled to face Belgium, with Lithuania set to take on France.

The finals of the men’s and women’s competitions are due to take place tomorrow.
