Bonica Brown broke her own world record at the World Open Classic Powerlifting Championships ©IPF

Bonica Brown delivered the pick of the performances at the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) World Open Classic Powerlifting Championships in Sun City in South Africa. 

The World Championships, which comprised squat, bench press and deadlift disciplines, saw eight weight categories contested for both the men and women.

In the over-84 kilograms women's superheavyweight, American Brown lifted a total of 668.5 kilograms to take home her seventh IPF Open Classic title, extending her own world record in the process.

Brown's victory saw her lift 273.5kg in the squat, 152.5kg in the bench and 242.5kg in the deadlift.

The United States had success in several other categories, with Meghan Scanlon winning the 63kg and Amanda Lawrence victorious in the 84kg. 

Tiffany Chapon and Noemie Allabert won gold medals for France in the women's 47kg and 52kg respectively.

Britain's Joy Nnamani came out on top in the 57kg, Chandler Babb of the US Virgin Islands won the 69kg and Canadian Jessica Buettner took home gold in the 76kg.

The men's events saw even more dominance from United States lifters, with four victories across the different categories. 

Taylor Atwood won the 74kg, Delaney Wallace was first in the 83kg, Chance Mitchell won the 93kg and in the over-120kg competition, Jesus Olivares was the victor.

There was also a men's gold for France, with Antoine Garcia beating the rest in the 59kg.

Other categories were won by Sweden's Eddie Berglund, in the 66kg, and Emil NorlIng, in the 105kg, and Mohamed Sahad of Algeria, who was the victor in the 120kg.

The next major event on the IPF powerlifting calendar is the World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, which is scheduled to take place from July 7 to 17.
