Spanish rider Carlos Verona of Movistar claimed his first International Cycling Union (UCI) WorldTour stage win on the penultimate day of the Critérium du Dauphiné in Vaujany, holding off a surging Primož Roglič, who took the general classification lead.

Verona completed 135 kilometres from Saint-Chaffrey in 3 hours 53min 55sec on the mountainous stage and in doing so earned a deserving stage victory.

Slovenian Roglič and his Jumbo-Visma team-mate Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard were part of a chasing group hunting down Verona in the latter stages, but came up short in the end.

Roglič was 12 seconds adrift in second and Vingegaard crossed the line in third, 25 seconds behind.

Australian Ben O'Connor of AG2R Citroën and Norway's Tobias Halland Johannessen of Uno-X Pro Cycling completed the top five in a splintered finish.

Despite finishing second, Roglič gained massively in the general classification thanks part to team-mate and yesterday's leader Wout van Aert coming in 14 minutes after the winner.

The Belgian struggled on the climbs and could not keep with the peloton, ending his campaign to win the race.

Now, the Slovenian holds a 44-second lead over Vingegaard, with the two Jumbo-Visma riders in contention before tomorrow's finale.

Jumbo-Visma has a 6min 33sec lead in the team classification too.

O'Connor is in third, 1:24 behind Roglič and six seconds in front of fourth-placed Ineos Grenadiers' Tao Geoghegan Hart of Britain.

A further two seconds back in fifth is Italian Damiano Caruso of Bahrain Victorious.

The Tour de Suisse is scheduled to start tomorrow, with Belgian Remco Evenepoel of Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl going in as one of the favourites, while Ineos Grenadiers' hopes lie with British riders Geraint Thomas and Adam Yates, as well as Dani Martínez of Colombia.

American cyclist Sepp Kuss is to lead Jumbo-Visma's team.
