Rome is set to become the first city to stage the International Volleyball Federation Beach Volleyball World Championships for the second time, with competition due to get underway tomorrow.

Italy's capital previously held the World Championships in 2011,

There are three courts at the Foro Italico venue, with the opening match on Centre Court featuring Japan’s Miki Ishii and Sayaka Mizoe against Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallists Joana Heidrich and Anouk Verge-Depre of Switzerland in Pool C of the women's tournament.

The Swiss pair are the only athletes who finished on the women's podium at last year's Olympics featuring in Rome.

Norway's men's Olympic champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum seek to build on their bronze achieved in Hamburg three years ago, and have been pitted in Pool H, starting against home favourites Davide Benzi and Carlo Bonifazi.

Olympic bronze medallists Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan of Qatar have also entered the World Championships, facing a Pool D opener against Gonzalo Melgarejo and Roger Battilana of Paraguay.

Russian and Belarusian athletes have been banned from competing at the World Championships due to the invasion of Ukraine, ruling out men's Olympic silver medallists Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovskiy, both of Russia.

Both the men's and women's competitions feature 48 teams, drawn into 12 pools of four.

The top two from each pool advance to the round of 32, as well as the four best ranked third-place teams.

The other eight pairs who finish third will contest lucky loser playoffs to determine the final four berths in the knockout stages,

All 48 pairs in the women's tournament are set to play their first matches tomorrow, with six of the 12 men's pools getting underway.

Teams are scheduled to face each other once in the pools, which are due to conclude on Monday (June 13).

The lucky loser round is due to be held on Tuesday (June 14), with knockout matches beginning on Wednesday (June 15).

The World Championships are set to conclude with medal matches on June 19.
