South Africa has named its netball squad for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games with each member of the team being among those to receive contracts.

It is the first time Netball South Africa has issued contracts to its national players, suggesting it is moving closer to making netball professionalised in the country.

Twenty-four players, seven of which compete outside of South Africa, were handed the performance-based contracts which commenced on April 1.

"Over the past three years I have been speaking about the need for and importance of turning the sport professional, this process, this moment right here is edging us closer to that goal," Netball South Africa President Cecilia Molokwane said.

"Rome was never built in a day so even here, we will not attain success overnight, this is a work in progress.

"I am glad we are here, and we are starting with twenty-four players for now."

Captain Bongiwe Msomi, who participated at Gold Coast 2018, and star Lenize Potgieter are due to lead the national team at Birmingham 2022.

Izette Griesel, Phumza Maweni, Shadine van der Merwe, Ine-Marí Venter and Zanele Vimbela are also due to appear again for their nation following their fifth-place finish four years ago.

Khanyisa Chawane, Boitumelo Mahloko, Tshinakaho Mdau, Lefebre Rademan, Monique Reyneke, Nicola Smith, Nicholé Taljaard and Elmeré van der Berg complete the squad for the Games.

Those to have received a contract but were not selected for the event were Marlize de Bruin, Kamogelo Maseko, Tarle Mathe, Nomfundo Mngomezulu, Lungile Mthembu, Sesandile Ngubane; Refiloe Nketsa, Karla Pretorius and Jamie van Wyk.

There is a chance some athletes may force their way into the team with the qualification deadline set for June 29.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held between July 28 and August 8 with the netball event taking place from July 29 to August 7.
