Having triumphed at Friday’s Irena Szewinska Memorial in Bydgoszcz with a throw of 80.28m, Nowicki maintained momentum at the Memorial Janusza Kusocinskiego meeting in Chorzow today, once again beating his compatriot, four-times world champion Pawel Fajdek.

On this occasion, Fajdek had to settle for third place at the Stadion Slaski with 79.62m as France’s Quentin Bigot produced a personal best of 80.55m.

Nowicki’s home hammer throw double was matched by Anita Wlodarczyk, the triple Olympic champion, who followed up her 74.13m in Bydgoszc with 75.76m.

Her compatriot Malwina Kopron, the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist who finished third behind her at the Irena Szewinska Memorial moved up a place today with 75.06m.

Chris Nilsen of the United States, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist, set a meeting record of 5.92m in a men’s pole vault where France’s 35-year-old former world record holder Renaud Lavillenie, sights set on Paris 2024, finished second with a season’s best of 5.81m.

Norway’s Pal Lillefose was third on countback, with Lavillenie’s younger brother Valentin fourth on 4.71m ahead of home vaulter Piotr Lisek on countback.

Olympic 100m hurdles champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn laid down another strong marker in World Championship year by clocking 12.43sec into a headwind of -1.4 metres per second to win from home hurdler Pia Skrzyszowaska on 12.73 and Jamaica’s Olympic bronze medallist Megan Tapper who clocked 12.90.

Multiple world and Olympic medallist Allyson Felix, in what she has said will be her final season, made her second Continental Tour Gold meeting appearance of 2022, clocking a season’s best of 50.71sec behind home athlete Natalia Kazmarek, whose huge personal best of 50.16 in Ostrava last week moved her to fifth in this season’s world list.

Today Kazmarek won with a time of 50.40, with third place going to one of her colleagues in the quartet that won 4x400m silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Justyna Swiety-Ersetic, in 50.74.

In the women’s 100m that concluded the track events, home sprinter Ewa Svoboda won in a meeting record of 11.08sec from Shannon Ray of the United States, who recorded a personal best of 11.19.

Meanwhile in the men’s shot put, Tom Walsh of New Zealand, the 2017 world champion, won the battle of the giants with the athlete who took that title in 2015 and 2019, Joe Kovacs, for the second time in two days, this time throwing a meeting record of 22.31m to the American’s 22.00m.

Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji won the women’s 800m in a personal best of 1min 58.28sec from Britain’s Jemma Reekie, fourth in the Tokyo 2020 final, who clocked 1:58.44.

Home 800m runner Patryk Dobek, the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist, earned victory in a season’s best of 1min 44.49sec from France’s Benjamin Robert, who equalled his personal best of 1:44.53.

Arthur Cisse of the Ivory Coast won the men’s 100m in 10.24sec from Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Abkar Mohammed who recorded 10.32, with United States veteran sprinter Mike Rodgers third in 10.37.

Home 110m hurdler Damian Czykier, second in Bydgoszcz, filled the same position today as he clocked 13.35sec behind winner Rafael Pereira of Brazil, who recorded 13.28.

Alexander Ogando of the Dominican Republic won the men’s 400m in a personal best of 44.68sec from South Africa’s Zakathi Nene, whose time of 44.92 was also a personal best.

In the women’s long jump, Milica Gardasevic and Agate De Sousa of Sao Tome and Principe each set a personal best of 6.81m, with the former earning victory through a better second-best effort.
