Italy's Paolo Nicolai and Samuele Cottafava came from behind to beat Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan of Qatar to win their first World Volleyball Beach Pro Tour Elite 16 title in Jūrmala. 

In a hard-fought contest, the pair recovered after losing the opening game 21-16 to clinch victory and deny the Qataris a second title of the tour after their success in Rosarito. 

Two game wins of 25-27 and 12-15 sealed victory and meant Nicolai and Cottofava took home the $150,000 (£120,100/€140,000) prize money. 

Earlier in the day, André Stein and George Wanderley of Brazil came out on top in the men's third place match. 

They also needed three games to beat Latvia's Kusti Nõlvak and Mart Tiisaar, winning the first game 17-21 before being pegged back 21-18 and edging the deciding game 13-15. 


In the women's Elite 16 competition, there was also new title winners as Canada's Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes defeated Carolina Solberg Salgado and Barbara Seixas de Freitas of Brazil.

After narrowly winning the first game 21-19, the Brazilian duo, who have already won Tlaxcala and Doha Challenge titles this year, responded with a 20-22 in the second game. 

But it was Pavan and Melissa who emerged as victors with a resounding 15-7 result in the third game. 

The third place match saw Brazil's Duda Lisboa and Ana Patrícia beat Sara Hughes and Kelley Kolinske in straight games, with a 21-19, 21-17 victory.
