German amateur Aline Krauter has won the 2022 Dinah Shore Trophy, an award that recognises leading women's amateur golfers who have excelled in combining their sport with academics and social activism.

Krauter, who won the Women’s Amateur Championship in 2020, helped Stanford University to victory in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Women's Golf Championships earlier this week and has also been granted an exemption to play in the Dana Open at the end of August.

"I’m honoured to be selected as the winner of the 2022 Dinah Shore Trophy Award," Krauter said.

"I’m super proud to be considered a leader of this team because it’s full of great golfers and great people.

"Having that role on the team is super special to me."

The prize is supported jointly by the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), the Friends of Golf (FOG) organisation and the Chevron Championship, one of the five major LPGA championships.

"Sharing this award with all the greats who have won it previously, including Stanford alum Casey Danielson, is super special, it’s an honour just being considered and a huge honour to win."

Stanford University receives a grant of $10,000 (£7918/ €9315) towards the women’s golf programme as a result of the award.

Krauter was named Stanford’s Most Valuable Player in 2020 and a Pac-12 Honor Roll honouree in 2020 and 2021.

Her career scoring average is 72.97, and this season her average score per round is 71.86, which puts her on course to be one of the best in Stanford women’s golf history.

She has achieved five top ten finishes in Cardinal team events in Collegiate golf.

To be eligible for the Dinah Shore Award, instigated in 1994, golfers must maintain a scoring average of 78 or lower and must take part in at least 50 per cent of the team’s events.

Krauter is studying for a degree in International Business Studies and has maintained a grade points average (GPA) of 3.62, well above the required 3.2 on an academic excellence scale of 4.0.

"Krauter is a leader in the classroom and on the golf course while challenging herself with a heavy Stanford course load," a citation from the LPGA said.

"Krauter is a service-minded individual with a special talent for connecting with children.

"She has shared her love of the game with young players in her home country of Germany by directing the children's summer golf camp at her local club, taking on significant responsibility as both golf coach and organisational leader."

She has also been involved with the Stanford ABC Literacy Day to help improve childhood literacy.

Past winners include current LPGA tour players Stacy Lewis, Amy Olsen and Amanda Blumenherst, now an analyst for the Golf Channel.
