A floral display inspired by the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham has won a gold medal at the Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show in London.

The entry by Birmingham City Council featured flowers grown at itsown nurseries in the city, and is the tenth consecutive gold medal won at Chelsea by submissions from the city.

"Congratulations to everyone from our parks and nurseries team, they have done a fantastic job of promoting the city and our status as Proud Host City for the Commonwealth Games with their bold and brilliant entry," Birmingham Council Leader Ian Ward said.

"The Chelsea Flower Show is a prestigious platform to promote the biggest event Birmingham will have ever held, and in winning this gold medal, we are getting a taste of the spirit of friendly competition that will be coming to our city."

The display has the Birmingham 2022 logo as its centrepiece and also features a representation of sports, including aquatics, at the Games which are set to open on July 28 and close on August 8.

"My favourite part of the display has got to be the diving," Glasgow 2014 silver platform synchro silver medallist Tonia Couch said.

"The diving board with the water coming out is absolutely beautiful.

“I just love the amount of colour, it’s just so eye-catching and meaningful, because there are lots of different sports involved in the Commonwealth Games."

Tom Bosworth, winner of a Commonwealth Games silver medal in the 20 kilometres walk at Gold Coast 2018, also relished the chance to see the display close up.

"To learn all about it and see all the little pointers to the different sports is just absolutely amazing and to know there is 3000 flowers in it is just remarkable," he said.

"The whole thing is great, I’ve always wanted to come to the Chelsea Flower Show,"

The Chelsea Flower Show ends this Saturday (May 28) but the winning entry is due to be reproduced at Birmingham Cathedral in July and August to coincide with the Commonwealth Games.

"The talented Birmingham City Council team has created a wonderful floral display to depict the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and I’d like to congratulate them on their success," Birmingham 2022 chair John Crabtree said.

"We can’t wait to see this gold medal winning display recreated in Birmingham city centre during the Games and I’m sure it will be extremely popular with residents and visitors alike."
