Olympic champions Finland maintained their perfect start to a home International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship by beating the United States in Tampere.

Mikael Granlund gave Finland a 17th-minute lead at Nokia Arena, which saw an attendance of 11,555 spectators.

Second-period efforts from Valtteri Filppula, Sakari Manninen and Mikko Lehtonen gave Finland a comfortable 4-0 advantage.

Alex Galchenyuk’s third-period goal proved only a consolation for the US, as Finland sealed a 4-1 victory.

The result puts Finland top of Group B on nine points, with Sweden second on six after winning their two matches.

The US remain third despite the defeat, ahead of the Czech Republic.

Latvia earned their first win of the tournament by edging Norway 3-2 in the second Group B match of the day.

Rodrigo Abols, Nikolajs Jelisejevs and Roberts Bukarts scored for Latvia, with the result placing them fifth in the eight-team group.

Cole Sillinger and Morgan Geekie sealed Canada’s 5-1 victory to move top of the standings.

Germany were 3-2 winners against France in the second Group A tie at the Helsinki Ice Hall, with Leonhard Proderl’s third-period strike separating the two teams.

The result places Germany third in the standings on six points from three matches.

Switzerland are second on the same points tally having played one match less.
