Italy’s Elisa Balsamo defeated Olympic champion Jennifer Valente of the United States to win the women’s omnium at the International Cycling Union (UCI) Track Cycling Nations Cup in Milton in Canada.

The Italian rider registered the best score in the elimination race and finished in the top six in the scratch, tempo and points events to claim the title with a score of 117 points.

Valente, who claimed omnium gold at last year’s Olympics in Tokyo, pushed four-time world medallist Balsamo but fell seven points short to seal silver.

Third place went to Alexandra Manly of Australia who finished on 104 - four points more than fourth-placed Yumi Kajihara of Japan.

There was an all-German battle for men’s individual pursuit gold with Nicholas Heinrich and Tobias Buck-Gramcko going head to head.

Heinrich established an early lead and managed to keep his nose in front as he triumphed in 4min 7.691sec, defeating Buck-Gramcko who clocked 4:09.266.

Australia’s James Moriarty came out on top in the tussle for bronze as he crossed the finish line in 4:14.177.

Jordan Kerby of New Zealand led after the first 1,000 metres but missed out on a medal, finishing in 4:17.631.

The men’s keirin crown was won by Kevin Santiago Quintero Chavarro of Colombia who finished in 10.461.

Matthew Richardson of Australia and Stefan Bötticher of Germany claimed silver and bronze, respectively.

Australia’s Kristina Clonan earned women’s 500m time trial gold after powering to victory in 32.987.

Pauline Sophie Grabosch of Germany was 0.473 behind Clonan in second, while Italy’s Miriam Vece was 0.701 further back in third.

The Netherlands emerged victorious from the men’s madison final, scoring 74 points as Britain came second with 66 points.

Germany completed the podium with 47 points.
