Australia have won gold and silver in the team pursuit events on the opening day of the International Cycling Federation (UCI) Nations Cup in Milton in Canada.

Josh Duffy, Conor Leahy, James Moriarty and Graeme Frislie combined to triumph in the men’s 4,000m competition, while Maeve Plouffe, Amber Pate, Chloe Moran, Alyssa Polites and Sophie Edwards joined forces to reach the final of the women’s event at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre.

The Australian male’s powered through the third lap to gain a swift advantage over Italy and they made full use of it in the final kilometre to beat Carloalberto Giordani, Stefano Moro, Mattia Pinazzi and Davide Plebani with a time of 3min 56.042sec.

Germany's Tobias Buck-Gramcko, Nicolas Heinrich,  and Domenic Weinstein took bronze for completing their head-to-head versus New Zealand in 3:53.818.

Prior to Australia’s win, Italy had already got one over their opponents with a victory in the women’s team purist gold medal match.

Elisa Balsamo, Chiara Consonni, Martina Fidanza and Silvia Zanardi united to led throughout for Italy and eventually beat Australia to win in 4:17.522.

The bronze battle between the United States' Megan Jastrab, Shayna Powless, Jennifer Valente and Lily Williams and Canada's Ngaire Barraclough, Sarah van Dam, Devaney Collier and Ariana Rode involved the Americans taking a marginal lead before hosts moved in front in the next two laps, only to be pegged back as the the US clocked 4:21.169 to take the medal.

The Netherlands trio of Jeffrey Hoogland, Sam Ligtlee and Roy van den Berg turned on the style against China's Qi Liu, Yongjia Luo and Yu Zhou in the men’s 750m team sprint.

After trailing in the initial half of the race, the Dutch moved up the gears to time at 43.309sec and beat China by just 0.092 seconds.

The bronze medal match saw Germany's Stefan Botticher, Marc Jurczyk and Paul Schippert combine to time at 43.996 to edge Alistair Fielding, Hayden Norris and Hamish Turnbull of Britain.

In the women's event, The Netherlands had to settle for silver in the women’s event after they lost to Germany.

The German team, consisting of Lea Sophie Friedrich, Pauline Grabosch and Emma Hinze, clocked at 46.807 while Dutcher riders Kyra Lamberink, Hetty van der Wouw and Laurine van Riessen concluded in 47.421.

Canada’s Lauriane Genest, Kelsey Mitchell and Sara Orban achieved a time of 47.817 to defeat British trio Lauren Bate, Lauren Bell and Emma Finucane to get their hands on the bronze medal.

The competition is scheduled to continue tomorrow with various events taking place, including the men’s and women’s scratch and elimination races.
