Teenage sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo and chess player Naledi Marape claimed top honours at the Botswana Sport Awards.

The Olympic bronze medal-winning men's 4x400 metres relay team were also recognised at the event in Gaborone, which celebrated sporting achievements from 2020 and 2021.

Tebogo won the under-20 100m title in 2021 and also left the World Championships in Nairobi with a 200m silver medal.

More recently, the 18-year-old set a new under-20 100m world record of 9.96sec last month.

Tebogo won the prize for the most outstanding male athlete.

The female equivalent was awarded to Marape, who is even younger and turns 16 this year.

Marape won the under-16 girls event at the 2021 African Youth Chess Championships in Accra, going unbeaten in nine matches to claim the title.

The men's men's 4x400m relay team won Botswana's sole medal at Tokyo 2020.

Isaac Makwala, Baboloki Thebe, Zibane Ngozi and Bayapo Ndori clocked 2min 57.18sec in the final, a new African record.

They saw off competition form the women's national football team, who have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time, to take home the team gong.

Their coach Justice Dipeba was named outstanding coach of the year.

The athletes of the year each received a BWP75,000 prize (£5,000/$6,100/€5,800), so too the 4x400m relay team.

Dipeba won BWP25,000 (£1,700/$2,00/€1,900).

The Botswana Sport Awards are jointly organised by the Botswana National Sport Commission, Botswana National Olympic Committee, Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development plus the Department of Broadcasting Services.
