To reach the next round, Sindhu, who won a silver medal at Rio 2016 and bronze at Tokyo 2020, faced a stern quarter-final test against China’s He Bingjiao, but passed it in three sets at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex in the Philippines's capital.

She is due to face Japan’s world champion Akane Yamaguchi, who beat Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong also in three sets, in the last four.

Yamaguchi suffered a 21-9 loss in the first set before managing to recover to win the next two sets 21-15 and 21-17.

The other women’s singles semi-final tie is due to involve China’s Wang Zhiyi and South Korea’s An Se-young after both athletes won their quarter-finals in straight sets.

Wang claimed a 21-19, 21-9 triumph against Wen-Chi Hsu from Chinese Taipei and An defeated world champion Sayaka Takahashi of Japan 21-15, 21-11.

In the men’s singles, Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Anthony Sinisuka Ginting suffered a shock loss to China’s Weng Hongyang.

Weng took the first set 21-13 but the Indonesian responded immediately, claiming the next 21-16.

However, Weng remained unfazed and he strolled to a 21-11 third-set victory.

He is scheduled to compete against Lee Zii Jia after the Malaysian claimed a 21-13, 21-11 triumph over Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan.

The other men’s single semi-final is to be an all-Indonesian tie between Jonatan Christie and Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo.

Christie took down Singapore’s world champion Loh Kean Yew 22-20, 23-21 while Wadoyo fended off China’s Li Shifeng 21-17, 21-14.

The competition is planned to resume tomorrow.
