Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen and Anders Antonsen advanced to the men’s singles final at the European Badminton Championships in Madrid.

Axelsen and Antonsen had been due to contest last year’s final in Kyiv, only for the former to have to withdraw from the match due to a positive COVID-19 test.

The contest looks set to take place in Madrid, after both players won their semi-final matches at the Polideportivo Municipal Gallur today.

Olympic champion Axelsen ended the challenge of Israel’s Misha Zilberman, who had eliminated two seeds en route to the last four.

Axelsen earned a 21-10, 21-11 win to maintain his record of winning each match at the tournament in straight games.

Defending champion Antonsen was taken to a deciding game for the second time at the tournament, as he eventually overcame France’s Toma Junior Popov 21-16, 19-21, 21-15.

Spanish star Carolina Marín moved to the brink of a dream comeback to competition after 11 months on the sidelines with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Marín beat Turkey’s Neslihan Yiğit 21-14, 21-13 in the women’s singles semi-finals, moving her a match away from earning a sixth successive European title.

Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour will face Marín in the final, after beating second seed Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark 21-19, 19-21, 21-10.

Defending champions Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva reached the women’s doubles final.

The Bulgarian sisters will seek to retain their title after beating Amalie Magelund and Freja Ravn of Denmark 21-11, 21-12 in the semi-finals.

Germany’s Linda Efler and Isabel Lohau upset second seeds Maiken Fruergaard and Sara Thygesen of Denmark 20-22, 21-15, 22-20 in the second semi-final.

Germany’s Mark Lamsfuß and Marvin Seidel will contest the men’s doubles final, after beating England’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy 23-21, 21-17.

The duo will meet Scotland’s Alexander Dunn and Adam Hall, after they were 21-10, 22-20 winners over The Netherlands’ Ruben Jille and Ties van der Lecq.

Lamsfuß and Lohau could secure two titles tomorrow, after the German players advanced to the mixed doubles final.

The pairing were 12-21, 21-16, 21-17 winners over Denmark’s Mikkel Mikkelsen and Rikke Soby Hansen.

France’s Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue will contest the final, after the second seeds beat Dutch pair Robin Tabeling and Selena Piek 21-19, 21-15.
