Kenya will feature in the women’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball competition at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games after being awarded a bipartite place.

The National Olympic Committee of Kenya, which serves as the Commonwealth Games Association of Kenya, has confirmed the invitation.

"This is a great opportunity for our athletes," Kenya’s Chef de Mission John Ogola told The Star newspaper.

"Our main aim stands to give all Kenyan athletes the best chance to represent the country.

"With this addition, Team Kenya athletes contingent now stands at 150 in 19 disciplines."

Kenya are poised to join England, South Africa and Scotland in the six-team women's tournament at the Games.

South Africa and Scotland triumphed at the African and European qualifiers, respectively, while England were granted a spot as the host nation.

The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation said in February that invitations would also be sent to Americas and Asia-Oceania representatives.

The invitations followed the cancellation of the qualification events.

Beth Wanja, Joyce Ambasa, Alice Wanjeri, Stella Titoy, Phyllis Nyambura, Rahel Akoth, Caroline Wanjira and Eunice Adhiambo are in contention to be named in Kenya’s team.

The squad have been training alongside the men’s team, who will also compete at the Games.

"For the first time in history, we shall have the wheelchair basketball team participate in a major competition," said Alfred Simiyu, Kenya’s team manager.

"We cannot wait to go and represent our nation as we aim for a podium finish with our four athletes."

Three invitational spots are yet to be announced for the men's event, with England, Northern Ireland and South Africa having already qualified.

Wheelchair 3x3 basketball and 3x3 basketball will make their debuts at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
