The first day of the World Bowls Indoor Championships took place today at the Bristol Indoor Bowling Club in England, with ladies, men's and mixed competition getting underway.

Scottish player Stewart Anderson - the most prominent player in the men's competition - defeated Zoltan Pavelka of Hungary 21-0, 14-2 in his opener.

He was competing under the International Indoor Bowls Council (IIBC) banner.

Arthur Lam of Hong Kong won in Group 1 too, beating Remmy Kebapetse of Botswana 10-2, 6-5.

In Group 2, Robert Briglia of Australia won 11-2, 8-1 against Jamaica's Robert Simpson; while Ian Merrien of Guernsey defeated Simpson 8-2, 7-4.

Robert Chisholm of Wales won 6-3, 11-4 against Isle of Man's Mark McGreal in Group 3, with Pakistan's Mohammed Ayub Quereshi picking up a 9-4, 11-0 victory over Benson Wambuga of Kenya.

Group 4 saw victories for Jason Evans of South Africa and Alexander Stewart from Jersey, while in Group 5 victories went to Mike Stepney of Scotland and David Bolt from England.

Representing World Bowls, Gary Kelly won his opener in Group 6, as did Mohammed Faitius Jabel of Malaysia.

England's Andrew Walters and Selwyn Hare of Israel were victorious in Group 7, while Ireland's Andrew Duncan and Hirenda Bhartu of Canada won in Group 8.

Alison Merrien, representing the IIBC, won her opener against United States' Anne Nunes in Group 8, setting one of the favourites for the title up well for the next group match.

Group 1 saw wins for Ireland's Sandra Bailie and Marietjie van den Bergh of The Netherlands, while Amy Williams of Wales and Jersey's Megan Kivlin were victorious in Group 2.

Israel's Ruth Gilor won in Group 3, as did Welsh player Kerry Packwood, while victories in Group 4 went to Janice Pilling of the Isle of Man and Sasia Schaft from The Netherlands.

Colleen Piketh from South Africa and Gloria Ha from Hong Kong won in Group 5, with Paula Garrett of the Isle of Man and Claire Anderson of Scotland victorious in Group 6.

Victory went to Spain's Carol Broomfield in Group 7 and to Malaysia's Nurul Alyani Jamal.
