The 2022 European Badminton Championships in Spain's capital Madrid got underway today in the men's and women's singles, setting up second round matches starting tomorrow.

In the opening set of matches, Gergo Pytel of Hungary defeated Cristian Savin of Moldova 21-15, 21-8 in the men's singles, and is now to play Max Weisskirchen from Germany next at the Polideportivo Municipal Gallur.

Milan Dratva from Slovakia won in straight games against Karl Kert of Estonia 21-14, 21-13, while England's Toby Penty won 21-17, 21-11 against Miha Ivanič from Slovenia.

Misha Zilberman of Israel was pushed in both games against Croatian Luka Ban, winning 23-21, 21-18, while Italian Fabio Caponio eased past Callum Smith of Scotland 21-15, 21-3.

Czech Republic's Jan Louda defeated Maxime Moreels of Belgium, 21-12, 21-12, while Tobias Kuenzi of Switzerland progressed past Greece's Stamatis Tsigirdakis 21-12, 21-11.

Joran Kweekel from The Netherlands also qualified for round two, easing past Mikolaj Szymanowski of Poland 21-6, 21-15.

In the women's singles, home favourite Beatriz Corrales came from a game down to defeat Israel's Ksenia Polikarpova 20-22, 21-17, 21-17, but her Spanish compatriot was knocked out in three games 21-13, 14-21, 21-17 by Mariya Mitsova of Bulgaria.

Freya Redfearn of England won 21-13, 21-12 over Bulgarian Hristomina Popovska, while Estonia's Kristin Kuuba thrashed Eleni Christodoulou of Cyprus 21-8, 21-16.

Tereza Švábíková from Czech Republic eased past Agnes Korosi of Hungary 21-15, 21-8, while Turkey's Aliye Demirbag won in two tight games against Slovakia's Martina Repiska 21-16, 21-17.

Finally, Rachael Darragh of Ireland defeated Hungarian Vivien Sandhorhazi 21-16, 21-18.
