The last stop in Singapore was the first stop on this season's circuit where Argentina failed to medal, having finished second once and third on three occasions in the first four events.

Santiago Gómez Cora's side suffered late heartbreak against Series leaders South Africa in the final in Málaga in January, and the Olympic bronze medallists were beaten 26-14 by Fiji in the semi-finals at Tokyo 2020.

However. they were not to be denied against the Singapore Sevens winners.

An early try from Kaminieli Rasaku put Fiji in front, but a converted try from Marcos Moneta had Argentina 7-5 up.

Santiago Vera Feld finished off a well-worked team move, before Moneta added his 10^th try of the tournament to give Argentina a commanding 17-5 advantage at half-time.

Jerry Tuwai crossed the whitewash but Fiji again missed the conversion, but one converted and one unconverted try from Felipe Del Mestre pulled Argentina clear and clinched a 29-10 victory.

Gómez Cora played in Argentina's last triumph on the Series circuit in San Diego in 2009, and expressed his pride at ending the wait of more than 100 events for their next Cup final win.

"You have to dream because dreams do come," the Argentinian head coach said.

"I loved playing on the circuit, but ever since I have been a coach this has been the moment I have been working towards and my players must take all the credit because they work so hard and they wanted to win this one for their country so much."

Australia finished third for the second event running, fighting back from 19-7 behind at half-time against Samoa to clinch a 29-21 victory against Samoa through a late try from Nathan Lawson converted by Maurice Longbottom.

Fiji had thrashed Samoa 45-5, while Australia were beaten 24-12 by Argentina.

In the quarter-finals, Argentina eased past England 40-17, and Fiji secured a narrow 24-21 win against France.

However, there was further disappointment for Series leaders South Africa, who were stunned 28-17 by Samoa.

The Blitzboks won the first four events of the season, but had their 36-match winning streak ended by the United States in Singapore before losing to Fiji in the quarter-finals on their return to action after missing the double-header in Spain due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Olympic silver medallists and Singapore Sevens runners-up New Zealand were also beaten at the quarter-final stage, losing 19-12 to Australia.

South Africa still lead the way with 111 points, but Argentina trimmed their lead to just six with their victory.

Australia are also in contention at the top of the standings on 100 points, but the fourth-placed US lost further ground, and are now on 70 after placing 13^th from the 16 teams featuring in Vancouver.

Fiji's Rasaku was named as player of the weekend.

Toulouse in France is due to host the next men's Series tournament from May 20 to 22.
