Participants have been encouraged to "Run for Ukraine" at the Vitality London 10,000 on May 2 in an effort to raise funds for the Ukraine humanitarian relief appeal.

Entry will cost a discounted £15 (€18.11/$19.59) and the proceeds will go towards the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Runners are being invited to fundraise for the DEC, which is made up of 15 leading aid charities in the United Kingdom, or for a Ukrainian relief charity of their choice.

They are also being invited to wear blue and yellow on the day of the run, therefore matching the blue and yellow colours of the running numbers.

This includes those who have already entered the Vitality London 10,000 and are not supporting a Ukrainian relief charity.

"The Run for Ukraine wave at the Vitality London 10,000 on Monday May 2 is the first of a number of initiatives that we will provide at our events for participants to fundraise to support humanitarian relief work in Ukraine," said Hugh Brasher, the event director of London Marathon Events.

"We know that so many people want to help and you will be helping by just entering the Run for Ukraine wave.

"We invite the running community to Run for Ukraine together, raise funds together, wear blue and yellow together and help to make a difference to the Ukraine relief effort."

People in Ukraine and those who have fled to neighbouring countries are being aided by donations to the DEC appeal.

Food, shelter, trauma support and medical care are among the list of resources given to those effected by the war in Ukraine.

The run is due to start on The Mall and will encompass several London landmarks - such as the Admiralty Arch, Nelson’s Column, St Paul’s Cathedral, Mansion House, the Bank of England, the Old Bailey, Somerset House, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey - and is expected to finish at Buckingham Palace.

British trio Sir Mo Farah, who is due to comeback after injury, Eilish McColgan and Charlotte Purdue are among the elite runners expected to take part.
