The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has announced it has opened the bidding process for the World Rapid and Blitz Championships and the World Women’s Rapid and Blitz Championships which are both due to be held this year.

The statement from FIDE claimed that "any federation member of FIDE or any organiser approved by the National Federation to host the event" will be allowed to launch a bid.

However, it is unlikely Russia or Belarus will be successful following the shifting of the Chess Olympiad from Moscow to the Indian city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, with the event due to be held at the end of July.

The deadline for applications has been set for May 31.

"The federation’s letter of support may be provided later when the bid’s evaluation procedure is launched," FIDE said regarding the bidding process.

"The bid may contain special proposals on financial and commercial conditions.

"The FIDE Council shall decide whether these conditions are admissible."

The governing body added that the FIDE General Strategy Commission (GSC) could request for additional information beyond the main bidding form.

A bid evaluation report will then be presented to the GSC for the FIDE Council to approve.

Those who are bidding for both competitions will be given priority in this process.

A FIDE technical delegate could be designated at the same time the hosts are announced.

Their role will be "to supervise the event on behalf of FIDE in consultation with GSC".

Last year, Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov and France's Maxime Vachier-Lagrave won the men's rapid and blitz titles.

Among women, Alexandra Kosteniuk, representing the Chess Federation of Russia, became the rapid champion while Kazakhstan's Bibisara Assaubayeva took gold in the blitz event.
