The United States’ Magda Skarbonkiewicz has won back-to-back titles in the sabre discipline on the second day of the Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships in Dubai.

The women’s event saw 90 fencers compete for the cadet crown which eventually ended with Skarbonkiewicz beating compatriot Siobhan Sullivan in the 15-9 in the final.

To reach the final, Skarbonkiewicz defeated France’s Alejandra Manga 15-11 while Sullivan secured a 15-10 victory against South Korea’s Eunyu Kim.

Manga and Kim both received bronze medals following their semi-final losses.

Finishing fifth and sixth respectively were Georgia’s Alexandra Kuvaeva and Samira Shokirova of Uzbekistan.

Meanwhile, in the cadet men’s event which saw 95 fencers compete, Uzbekistan’s Zuhriddin Kodirov defeated yesterday’s junior cadet winner, Colin Heathcock.

Kodirov edged the encounter 15-13 to ensure he took gold at the German’s expense.

The match was set up after Kodirov defeated American Cody Ji 15-10 and Heathcock took down American William Morrill 15-7.

Ji and Morrill were awarded bronze medals as defeated semi-finalists.

Connor Liang of the US ended the competition ranked fifth while Hungary’s Kornél Péch took sixth.

Today's proceedings also included the Opening Ceremony, with International Fencing Federation Interim President Emmanuel Katsiadakis declaring the Championships officially open.

Eighteen events are scheduled to be staged across nine days at the Hamdan Sports Complex.
