Olympic bronze medallist Yousef Karami has been named as the new Pakistan national team taekwondo coach.

Following his final major competition bout against Uzbeskistan’s Jasur Baykuziyev at the Incheon 2014 Asian Games, the Iranian made his way into coaching experience through a taekwondo club in Croatia.

The Iranian won numerous medals during his career with the Olympic bronze in the 80 kilograms category at Athens 2004 being one of his most recognised achievements.

He also won a World Championships gold at Garmisch-Partenkirchen 2003 in the 84kg weight division as well as the 87kg category at Gyeongju 2011.

His other two World Championships medals were bronzes, coming in the 84kg discipline at Madrid 2005 and in the 87kg category at Copenhagen 2009.

In addition, Karami achieved Asian Games golds at 2006 Doha for winning the 84kg category and at Guangzhou 2010 for being the best competitor in the 87kg discipline.

Other achievements include securing a gold and two silvers at the Asian Championships and a gold at Universiade.

His Asian Championships gold came at Amman 2002 in 72kg while his silvers followed at Astana 1010 and Tashkent 2014 in the 87kg.

Karami’s only Universiade gold was won in the 84kg category at Bangkok 2007.
