Russia is planning to host its own Summer University Games with invites expected to be sent to institutions in countries it enjoys a good relationship with.

Following the invasion of Ukraine, Russia was banned from competing at all International University Sports Federation (FISU) events which include the rescheduled Summer World University Games, set to take place in Chengdu in June and July this year.

Of 193 United Nations General Assembly members, four, not including Russia, voted to support President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

These included Eritrea, North Korea and Syria - who are thought to be recipients of invitations to the Russia Games.

Russia's Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin announced the plans at the "We are together. Sport" forum this week.

Matytsin was also the President of FISU until December 17 2022.

He stepped aside from the role following World Anti-Doping Agency sanctions imposed on the nation in response to the cover-up of a state-sponsored doping programme.

The Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Games, as well as the majority of competition, are set to be held in the Ulyanovsk region in Volga.

"This year the All-Russian Universiade will take place, where we will invite the universities of our friendly countries - in early July," said Matytsin, as reported by Russia's official state news agency TASS.

insidethegames has contacted FISU for a comment on the situation, but the organisation is yet to respond.

FISU made the decision to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from its events until at least the end of 2022 following the recommendation to do so from the International Olympic Committee.

Russian and Belarusian athletes were also banned from the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympic Games earlier this year in response to the war in Ukraine, which similarly resulted in Russia hosting a replacement event for athletes of the two countries.

The Russian city of Yekaterinburg is scheduled to host the 2023 Summer World University Games.
