Daniil Medvedev missed the chance to restore his status as men's singles world number one after losing to defending champion Hubert Hurkacz at the quarter-final stage of the Miami Open, while Naomi Osaka and Iga Świątek reached the women's singles final.

Poland's world number 10 Hurkacz claimed his sole Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Masters 1000 event victory in the American city last year, and he impressed on Hard Rock Stadium to triumph in a little more than two hours.

He won a first set tiebreak 9-7 before taking the second set 6-3.

Russian tournament top seed Medvedev, competing as a neutral, would have returned to the top of the ATP world rankings with victory, but fell at the quarter-final stage for the second year running at the Miami Open.

Hurkacz said of his victory: "I think the return was crucial.

"I was able to make a lot of returns and get some free points on my serve, because having rallies with Daniil is fun, but they get long.

"It is good I was able to get some free points.

"I have spent a lot of time in Florida, so I am used to the humidity.

"I think the conditions were in my favour today, so I tried to use them."

In the other quarter-final of the day, 18-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz reached his second consecutive ATP Masters 1000 semi-final after coming from behind to beat Serbia's Miomir Kecmanović 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.

Alcaraz was left playing catch up in the deciding tiebreak after losing his serve to fall 2-0 behind, but recovered to win it 7-5.

In the women's singles, Świątek of Poland underlined her status as the in-form player on the Women's Tennis Association Tour as a 16th straight victory, this time against American Jessica Pegula, helped her to reach the final

Fresh from WTA 1000 triumphs at the Qatar Open and Indian Wells Masters, Świątek moved into another final without dropping a set after overcoming Pegula 6-2, 7-5.

The 20-year-old is set to become the world number one regardless of how she fares in the final against Osaka, following the retirement of Australia's Ashleigh Barty.

Osaka of Japan is into her first WTA Tour final since winning last year's Australian Open, coming from one set down to defeat Swiss Olympic champion Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

She fired 18 aces en route to victory, a season-high from any player so far.

The men's singles semi-finals are set to be held tomorrow at the Miami Open, starting with Argentina's Francisco Cerúndolo against Casper Ruud of Norway, followed by the women's singles final on Saturday (April 2).
