Argentina has selected four athletes for the upcoming Pan American Para Taekwondo Open Championships in Rio de Janeiro.

The country is hoping to build on the historic bronze medal won by Juan Samorano at Tokyo 2020, when the sport made its debut on the Paralympic programme.

Samorano defeated Nurlan Dombayev of Kazakhstan in his bronze-medal bout in the men's K44 75 kilograms category at the Games in Japan last year.

He edged the contest 13-12 after dramatically going in front in the very last second of the match.

Samorano will lead the team at the event in Rio de Janeiro, which is scheduled for April 15 at Carioca Arena 1.

The venue was used at the Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics, staging basketball, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby.

Joining Samorano in the Argentine squad will be veteran Facundo Novik and newcomers Leandro Fernandez and Miguel Galeano.

This will be the biggest team Argentina has sent to the Pan American Championships.

"We start the year with great enthusiasm and optimism," said Argentina's coach Carlos Guerrini.

"The medal that Juan Samorano got in Tokyo revitalised [our programme] and serves as an example for us."
