There were no huge surprises at the Miami Open as Daniil Medvedev and Iga Świątek - the highest seeds left in the respective men’s and women’s singles draws - eased through to the next round with straight set victories.

Poland’s Świątek, who is set to become the new women’s world number one next week, continued her sensational form with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Coco Gauff of the United States at the Hard Rock Stadium, at the joint Association of Tennis Professionals Masters 1000 and Women's Tennis Association 1000 tournament.

The 20-year-old took just one hour and 16 minutes to seal her place in the quarter-finals as she made it 14 wins in a row.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitová of the Czech Republic will be hoping to end Świątek’s winning run as she faces the Polish player in the last eight.

Kvitová surrendered a healthy lead in the opening set before taking it in a tie-break and then completing a 7-6, 6-4 win over Veronika Kudermetova who was one of several Russians competing as neutrals due to action taken by tennis authorities against their country in response to Russia and Belarus' war in Ukraine.

Japan’s four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka reached the last eight of the Miami Open for the second straight year after beating American Alison Riske 6-3, 6-4.

Osaka will now face another American opponent in Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins who prevailed 6-2, 6-4 against Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur.

Spanish fifth seed Paula Badosa ended Czech 16-year-old Linda Fruhvirtová’s superb run in Miami with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph.

Jessica Pegula of the US will be Badosa’s next opponent after she defeated Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina who retired hurt after losing the first set 6-0.

Olympic champion Belinda Bencic of Switzerland saw off Russian neutral Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2, 6-3 and will now take on Australian wildcard Daria Saville who came from a set down to beat Italian Lucia Bronzetti 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.

Jenson Brooksby of the US showed his mental toughness as he battled back to defeat 15th seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain to set up a fourth-round meeting with Medvedev in the men’s singles.

The 21-year-old American rallied from 4-0 down in the deciding set to beat Bautista Agut 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in what was the shock result of the day.

"I'm happy to get through that one," said Brooksby.

"I thought my competing today was a lot better.

"Still a little streaky, but usually it would be easy to mentally fold in that situation, I think.

"But I stayed really mentally strong, I competed until the end and it went my way."

Russian neutral Medvedev sailed into the fourth round with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Spain’s Pedro Martinez as he looks to usurp Serbia’s Novak Djokovic at the top of the world rankings.

Third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece also looked in fine form as he downed Australia’s Alex De Minaur 6-4, 6-3.

Tsitsipas will now have the chance to gain revenge over Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz in the last 16.

Alcaraz stunned Tsitsipas at the US Open and has continued to produced superb performances, highlighted by his 6-4, 6-4 win over experienced Croatian Marin Cilic.

Defending champion Hubert Hurkacz of Poland was forced to dig deep as he defeated Russian neutral Aslan Karatsev 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

An all-American third-round match ended with a win for Taylor Fritz, who overcame his close friend Tommy Paul 7-6, 6-4.

In the other matches, South Africa’s Lloyd Harris outlasted Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 and Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanović saw off Sebastian Korda of the US 7-6, 6-3.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow.
