Iran ended Qatar’s long reign as holders of the Men’s Asian Beach Handball Championship crown when they triumphed on home sand in Tehran.

Both teams ended the round-robin competition with four wins and one loss, but Iran emerged victories after beating Qatar in the decisive final game to seal the title.

Qatar won the opening set 17-16 in the title decider before Iran took the next 14-12 before winning the shootout 12-10.

It was the first time since 2007 that Qatar had not won the title as they secured top spot in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Qatar and Iran will represent Asia in the Men’s Beach Handball World Championships, scheduled to be held from June 21 to 26 in Greece after finishing in the top-two.

Iran’s other victories in Tehran came against India, the Philippines and Vietnam with their only defeat coming against Oman.

Qatar beat the Philippines, Oman, India and Vietnam before losing to Iran.

Vietnam finished third in the standings, followed by Oman, the Philippines and India.

Iran also won the Asian Men’s Youth Beach Handball Championship crown for the first time after winning all five of their matches.

The Iranian team did not drop a single set as they stormed to the title, while Jordan came second ahead of Qatar, Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.

Having  finished in the top three, Iran, Jordan and Qatar have also secured their places in this year’s Men’s Youth Beach Handball World Championships in Greece.
