The Miami Open got underway today with the first round of qualifying in the men's and women's singles starting at the giant Hard Rock Stadium in Florida.

Spain's Fernando Verdasco defeated Portuguese João Sousa 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and is now due meet Hugo Grenier of France tomorrow in qualifying round two of this Association of Tennis Professionals Tour Masters 1000 event which follows hot on the heels of the event in Indian Wells where the United States' Taylor Fritz defeated Spain's Rafael Nadal to lift the title.

Shintaro Mochizuki of Japan moved into the next round after his opponent, Denmark's Holger Rune, retired with an injury having already lost the opening set 6-1.

South Africa's Kevin Anderson had a comfortable passage into the second qualifying round with an 6-3, 6-4 win over Australian Alex Bolt. 

Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka defeated Egor Gerasimov, who is from Belarus and was competing under a neutral flag, 6-4, 6-2 and is set to face America's Christopher Eubanks in the second round. 

Peter Gojowczyk of Germany won 6-2, 6-2 over his compatriot Cedrik-Marcel Stebe. 

In the Women's Tennis Association 1000 event, China's Qiang Wang defeated Renata Zarazúa of Mexico 6-2, 6-1 and is set to meet Italy's Lucia Bronzetti tomorrow. 

Storm Sanders of Australia won 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 against Germany's Jule Niemeier, while her compatriot Tatjana Maria defeated Britain's Harriet Dart 6-3, 6-3. 

Poland's Magdalena Fręch defeat American Whitney Osuigwe with a scoreline of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. 

Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens lost the opening 4-6 against France's Diane Parry before rallying to take the next two sets 6-4, 7-5 and secure victory. 

The competition is set to continue tomorrow with women’s and men’s singles qualifying session two. 

Teenagers Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine and Belgium's Alison Van Uytvanck will face each other for the first time, while America's Amanda Anisimova is due to encounter her compatriot Shelby Rogers.

Poland's Poland’s Iga Świątek, the winner in Indian Wells, is due to enter the competition in the main rounds and will start as favourite with Australia's world number one Ashleigh Barty again missing as she takes a break from the sport.
