Top seed Tai Tzu-ying triumphed in straight games in the standout women's singles quarter-final against the defending champion Nozomi Okuhara at the All England Open Badminton Championships in Birmingham.

The Tokyo 2020 women's singles Olympic silver medallist from Chinese Taipei overcame her Japanese opponent 21-10, 21-11 at the Utilita Arena, and admitted she was surprised at the emphatic nature of her victory.

"I did not expect to win so convincingly," Tai said.

"It’s always tough when you play Japanese players because (you) have to concentrate on every point.

"I’m most pleased that I did not make any mistakes.

"I needed to focus because I haven’t played her in a long time and she is really fast-paced on court.

"I tried to match her speed.

"I hope I have the same conditions and the same performance tomorrow."

The top four seeds all advanced in the women's singles competition.
