Canada's Laurie Denommée was among the athletes who shone on the first day of qualifying at the International Gymnastics Federation Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Cairo.

Denommée was the top performer in the women's uneven bars, scoring 12.700 at the Cairo International Stadium.

Ukraine's Daniela Batrona was her nearest challenger with 12.100, with South Africa's Caitlin Rooskrantz also among the eight gymnasts who progressed with her score of 12.066.

The women's vault also got underway in the Egyptian capital, with Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan leading the way with 12.8683.

Aruna Budda Reddy of India was second in qualifying with 12.783, while Denommée was among the top three in the vault discipline too with 12.766.

In men's qualifying, Paul Juda led an American one-two in the floor exercise.

Juda notched 14.533, and Ian Lasic-Ellis 14.166.

Israel's Olympic gold medallist Artem Dolgopyat was the third-best qualifier with his score of 14.066.

Dolgopyat missed out on qualifying in the men's pommel horse, which was led with 15.066 by Rhys McClenaghan of Ireland.

Kazakhstan's Nariman Kurbanov and Harutyun Merdinyan of Armenia notched 14.633 and 14.522 respectively to complete the top three.

The other discipline which featured qualifying today was the still rings, in which İbrahim Çolak of Turkey scored 14.766, Vahagn Davtyan of Armenia 14.733 and Italy's Salvatore Maresca 14.600.

The top-eight qualifiers in each discipline progress to the finals, with competition continuing tomorrow in the women's balance beam and floor, and the men's vault, parallel and horizontal bar.
