Hockey Canada has announced that Guy Lafleur, Lanny McDonald and Kim St-Pierre have been named to the Order of Hockey in Canada.

The governing body said the distinguished honourees will have their contributions to the sport recognised at the annual Hockey Canada Foundation Gala and Golf in Niagara Falls this June.

"To be named to the Order of Hockey in Canada is one of the most prestigious accomplishments in our sport and all three Distinguished Honourees in the Class of 2022 are incredibly deserving of this honour," said Tom Renney, Hockey Canada chief executive.

"Guy, Lanny and Kim have each contributed immensely to the growth of hockey across our country and internationally and we are thrilled that they will be celebrated in Niagara Falls this June.

"On behalf of Hockey Canada, our board and the Order of Hockey in Canada selection committee, I would like to congratulate Guy, Lanny and Kim on this tremendous achievement."

Lafleur was voted one of the 100 greatest National Hockey League players during the league’s centennial season in 2016 to 2017.

He won the Stanley Cup five times during his 17-year career and was named to the NHL First All-Star team on six occasions.

Lafleur is the all-time leading scorer for the Montreal Canadiens with 1,276 points, while his number 10 jersey was retired by the team in 1985.

He recorded 18 points in 21 international games for Canada and was awarded the Officer of the Order of Canada in 1980.

Four-time NHL all-star McDonald co-captained the Calgary Flames to their first Stanley Cup in 1989.

He recorded 1,006 points in 1,111 games during a 16-year NHL career, while his number nine jersey was retired in 1990, two years prior to his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

McDonald represented Canada at international level as a player and official, serving as a general manager and director of player personnel.

Canada won gold at 2004 World Championships when McDonald held the latter role.

St-Pierre has also been named to the Order of Hockey, one year after her induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

She ranks first among goaltenders in games played, wins and shutouts for the Canadian national team.

St-Pierre was part of a dominant period for Canada’s women’s ice hockey team, winning three consecutive Olympic titles at Salt Lake City 2002, Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010.

St-Pierre was named top goaltender at Salt Lake City 2002.

She also won five Women’s World Championship gold medals during her career.

The Order of Hockey in Canada was first introduced in 2012, with the honour seeking to recognise the outstanding contributions or service to the sport.

Players and officials must have ended their career a minimum of five years before their election, with the three recipients each year chosen by a selection committee.

The 12-member selection committee vote via a secret ballot.

A total of 36 individuals have been awarded to the Order of Hockey in Canada since its establishment.

Ken Dryden, Bill Hay, Angela James, Sheldon Kennedy, Kevin Lowe and Dr. Charles Tator, who were the 2020 and 2021 honourees will also be recognised at the Hockey Canada Foundation Gala and Golf event.

The event gives 50 per cent of its net proceeds to host community and surrounding region.
