Turkish duo Murat Ilbilgi and Rümeysa Pelin Kaya claimed victory in the trap mixed team on day four of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Cup in Nicosia.

During their journey to winning Turkey’s second gold medal of the competition so far, Ilbilgi and Rumeysa Kaya combined for 39 in the semi-final to beat Australia’s World Championships bronze medallist Penny Smith and Mitchell Iles by a single point at the Cyprus Olympic Shooting Range "Lakis Psimolophitis".

It was a bad semi-final for San Marino's Tokyo 2020 trap mixed team silver medallists Gian Marco Berti and Alessandra Perilli, the third couple in the semi-final match, who finished with a total of 21 points.

The Turkish pair were matched against Australia’s James Willet, winner of the 2019 World Championships trap mixed team event, and Laetisha Scanlan.

This was after they comfortably reached the final after scoring 42 to overcome Slovakia’s Zuzana Rehák-Štefečeková and Marian Kovacocy by seven points and Oğuzhan Tüzün ajnd Safiye Sariturk, another Turkish pairing, by 19 points.

The effort of Rehák-Štefečeková, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic trap champion, and Kovacocy to score the most out of those who did not progress meant they were awarded with the bronze medal.

The final was a close encounter with both teams totalling five points after 10 rounds.

In the eventual shoot-off, Ilbilgi and Rumeysa Kaya claimed a 7-6 victory against the Australian duo.

Other events of the day included the first round of qualification for the men’s and women’s skeet categories.

Three male shooters - Italy’s Tammaro Cassandro, France’s Éric Delaunay and Czech Republic’s Jan Zámečník - finished with a perfect 50 points.

Italy's Martina Maruzzo topped the women’s skeet standings alongside Caitlin Connor of the United States thanks to both athletes scoring 49 points.

Finishing two points below them were Italy’s Rio 2016 Olympic skeet women's champion Diana Bacosi and the United states’ two-time world champion Danila Jo Vizzi.

Tomorrow’s action is due to see the men’s and women’s trap team qualification and medal events take centre stage, while the men’s and women’s skeet qualification continues.
