India took the bonus point in the women's International Hockey Federation (FIH) Hockey Pro League by claiming the shootout following a 1-1 draw with Germany in a reversal of yesterday's match in Bhubaneswar.

India put the disappointment of the previous day's shootout defeat, when Germany had beaten them 2-1 following a 1-1 draw, aside at the Kalinga Stadium,

It was Germany who first took the lead just before half-time when Felicia Wiedermann drove the ball from a penalty corner beyond Devi Kharibam in the Indian goal.

The lead did not pacify Germany's head coach Akim Bouchouchi, who expressed his unhappiness about his team's performance.

"We are making too many faults in our build-up and allowing India to take possession too easily," he said.

The third quarter saw India's Nisha Warsi finally scoring a goal after some indecision by the German defence.

Both teams had chances to wrap the result up, but none managed to score a goal.

India looked way more confident in the penalty shootout than yesterday and took a 3-0 lead through the excellence of goalkeeper Savita Punia, who kept the Germans out, while Tete Salima, Kumari Sangita and Sonika Tandi scored the three goals.

"I am very happy, we did very well and worked hard over both matches," India’s Navneet Kaur, elected player of the match, said.

Germany's captain Lisa Nolte thought the shootout defeat was harsh on her young and inexperienced said.

"The feeling in this Stadium is awesome but we were unlucky to lose the game today," she said.

"I am proud of my team.

"We did a great job but we were unlucky not to win today."

The bonus point lifted India into second place in the league table, moving ahead of The Netherlands and behind Argentina.

Germany appears in sixth position just one point behind Spain.

It is due to be India's men's team next in the FIH Pro League at the Kalinga Stadium when they play Argentina on Saturday (March 19).

Germany's women, meanwhile, are due to return home to play against Spain on Tuesday and Wednesday (March 22 and 23) at the Deutscher Sportklub in Düsseldorf.
