Ali Farag won the PSA Optasia Championship final after defeating Diego Elias in four games at the Wimbledon Club ©PSA World Tour

Second seed Ali Farag of Egypt overcame an injury in the warm-up to win the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Optasia Championship title, as he defeated Diego Elías of Peru in four games at the Wimbledon Club in London.

Farag and Elías were meeting in a PSA final for the first time, with Farag heading into the match with a 13-2 advantage in the head-to-head record between the pair.

The start to the final was delayed when Farag required treatment for a back spasm which occurred in the warm-up, and he struggled in game one, with Elías manoeuvring his opponent around the court well on his way to taking it 11-4.

Farag found his rhythm to take game two 11-8, and won game three by the same scoreline, with Elías appearing to get distracted as the Egyptian continued to receive treatment between games.

Game four proved a particularly close affair, with Elías saving a match ball, before creating a game ball opportunity of his own and a chance to take the match to a fifth game.

Good shot-making from Farag allowed him to save the game ball, before he closed out the match at the second time of asking, with the final score in game four 13-11.

In the process Farag won a 25th PSA title, and his first major title in the United Kingdom.

The next men’s event on the PSA World Tour is another Gold  competition - the Canary Wharf Classic - which is scheduled to begin in London on Sunday (March 13) and run through to March 18.
