The Combat Institute of Australia's boxing head coach Kevin Smith is to leave his role to take up the post of technical director at the Saudi Arabia Boxing Federation.

Smith has held the head coaching position since 2014, and helped Australia to win its first boxing medal at an Olympic Games since Seoul 1988 at Tokyo 2020 courtesy of Harry Garside's bronze in the men's lightweight division.

He also contributed to Australian medals at the International Boxing Association World Boxing Championships in 2017 and 2019, and the Women's World Boxing Championships in 2016 and 2018.

At Gold Coast 2018, Australia won three gold, two silver and three bronze medals in boxing - its best ever performance in the sport at the Commonwealth Games.

Smith is due to remain as Australia's head coach for the Women's World Boxing Championships in Istanbul in May, and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games where boxing is scheduled from July 29 to August 7 at the NEC Hall 4.

He will move full-time to Saudi Arabia after the conclusion of the Games.

"It has been a privilege working with Australia’s elite boxers over the past eight years," Smith commented.

"Whilst I am moving to a new role and a new country, I hope to retain these links and will watch Australian boxers with great interest over the coming years.

"And of course, we still have two big campaigns to deliver at over the coming months which I am very excited about."

Moving closer to his children and grandchildren in Britain and the opportunity to lead Saudi Arabia's new boxing programme were cited among the reasons for Smith's departure.

The Combat Institute of Australia plans to advertise for an experienced candidate to take over as head coach, and hopes to finalise the handover in the coming months.
