Iga Świątek and Anett Kontaveit will meet in the Qatar Open singles final at the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) 1000 tournament after triumphing in their semi-final matches in Doha.

Świątek of Poland, who is the seventh seed at the tournament, overcame a hurdle in her history to defeat Greek sixth seed Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-3.

After the 20-year-old Polish player failed to beat her opponent in all three of their previous matches, she managed to get the job done in straight sets to qualify for her second WTA 1000 final.

She managed to do this in one hour and 28 minutes of stunning tennis.

In a game where not much could split them, Świątek hit 20 winners to Sakkari’s nine and the Pole converted five break points in comparison to the Greek’s three.

Świątek has now beaten two top 10 players consecutively, overcoming Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter-finals, to take her tally of wins against top 10 players to seven.

"These matches when I play against players that I really didn't have a good head-to-head before, it shows I did a good job changing that," the 2020 French Open champion said after the match.

"It's like a brand new start for me.

"Even though I have been on tour and my opponents are the same, I feel like these tournaments are different.

"That's really great for me."

Meanwhile, Estonia’s number four seed Kontaveit took down Latvia’s 15th seed Jeļena Ostapenko.

Kontaveit snatched the early momentum to take the first set 6-1 comfortably.

Ostapenko attempted to make amends in the second, putting up a fight to save her tournament.

However, her efforts were overpowered by Kontaveit, who won the set 6-4.

The Estonian served superbly, making four aces to the Latvian’s one.

She also won 68 per cent of points on her first serve and 64 per cent of points on her second.

Ostapenko, on the other hand, saw her success percentage dwindle to 53 on her first serve and 48 on her second.

Tomorrow's final provides an opportunity for Świątek to challenge for her fourth career WTA singles title whilst Kontaveit can win her seventh.

Meanwhile, the American duo of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula won the women's doubles event after beating Russia's Veronika Kudermetova and Belgium's Elise Mertens on a tiebreak.

Kudermetova and Mertens took the first set 6-3 before the Americans bounced back in the second to win it 7-5.

A tense tiebreak fell in Gauff and Pegula's favour as they marched on to win 10-5 to take home their first title as a doubles pairing.
