Margis won two-man gold earlier in the week as breakman for Francesco Friedrich to add to two golds earned at Pyeongchang 2018.

"It is something very special for a brakeman because we often fall off the back," said Margis.

"I am incredibly excited to have represented Team Germany and I can also say that is the icing on the cake of your career."

Margis, along with Friedrich, Candy Bauer and Alexander Schüller, leads at the halfway stage of the four-man competition

"Thorsten has won three gold medals at the Olympics together with Francesco Friedrich, however, the focus is often primarily on the pilot," German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) President Thomas Weikert said.

"With the appointment of Thorsten, we would like to give him the attention he has earned over the years in the team with Francesco."

Seven gold medals in sliding sports helped Germany achieve its medal targets for the Games, with more success expected tomorrow.

"We have achieved the previously announced goal of reaching the medal corridor between Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018," Chef de Mission Dirk Schimmelpfennig said. 

"Germany is currently in second place in the medal table, which we can be very satisfied with.

"In addition to hoped-for success, there have also been positive surprises, such as in cross-country skiing and skeleton, which make the Olympic Games so special.

"This is by no means a matter of course, especially under the adverse circumstances, and deserves a lot of respect."

Denise Herrmann, in biathlon, and Nordic combined skier Vinzenz Geiger have also won gold medals.

"The team were fully convincing as Germany's ambassadors and were not only able to realise their own Olympic dream, but also set very important and inspiring signals for young competitive athletes in Germany, especially in times of the pandemic," Weikert claimed.

The digital Deutsche Haus operated throughout the Games has showed an increase of 300,000 page views on Tokyo 2020 last year, and more than 70 million contacts were reached on social media.

Around 10,000 personal messages were also sent to team members.

However, it is not all good news.

After the silver medal in Pyeongchang, the men's ice hockey team lost to Canada, the US and Slovakia and performances in figure skating, short track and snowboarding were also below expectation.

The DOSB have announced a review of sports' performance "as part of the sport-specific evaluations and will be included in the new funding cycle with potential analysis, structural discussions and funding decisions."
