Germany's Shara Hubrich fell to an unexpected defeat against 20-year-old Egyptian Yasmin Nasr Elgewily at the first Karate 1-Premier League event of the year in Fujairah, but two Olympic runners-up advanced to finals.

Hubrich, the runner-up at last year's World Championships, also in the United Arab Emirates, breezed through the pool stage to set up a quarter-final clash with Italy's Erminia Perfetto.

Perfetto stood little chance against Hubrich as she was crushed 4-0.

Elgewily was waiting in eh semi-finals following her victory over Kateryna Kryva of Ukraine.

Elgewily, who won gold at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games, prevailed 3-2 in a back-and-forth bout to shock her opponent.

She will face Moldir Zhangbyrbay of Kazakhstan in the final on Sunday (February 20) after she beat Junna Tsukii of the Philippines 4-3.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Anzhelika Terliuga of Ukraine was able to live up to her top seeding in the women's under-50kg category so far.

Wins against Valéria Kumizaki of Brazil and Turkey's Tuba Yakan set up a difficult bout with European champion Anna Chernysheva of Russia in the gold-medal match.

In the men's under-60kg class, Angelo Crescenzo of Italy fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Kazakhstan's Yerkinbek Baitureyev.

Baitureyev was then defeated by Russian Iurik Ogannisian, who will face Jordanian karateka Abdallah Hammad in the final.

Tural Aghalarzade of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan's Didar Amirali are set to go head-to-head in the men's under-67kg match for gold.

Károly Gábor Hárspataki of Hungary and Egyptian Abdalla Abdelaziz made up the last kumite finalists of the day after winning semi-final bouts in the men's under-75kg class.

There was also women's kata action, with Olympic silver medallist Kiyou Shimizu reaching an all-Japanese final where Hikaru Ono awaits.

Ono beat Grace Lau Mo Sheung, a Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist, in the semi-finals.
