The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has reported that the recent Women's Asian Cup has set all-time records for online engagement.

The tournament, which concluded on February 6 in India, saw the AFC's digital channels grow rapidly as statistics increased by 5,324 per cent compared to the 2018 edition.

Content from the tournament received more than 270 million impressions, 17 million engagements and 74 million video views across various platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The AFC delivered regular updates in Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Farsi and Indonesian as well as English.

"The AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 has achieved many milestones, on and off the pitch, with our talented football teams and officials creating history while our digital platforms continue to rise in record numbers and engaging with more fans than ever before," said AFC general secretary Datuk Seri Windsor John.

"Our digital channels continue to be Asia’s leading content provider and it is wonderful to see a peak in engagement as more fans from around the world show their interest and support for our world-class football teams and competitions."

In addition to its digital coverage, the competition also enjoyed success from television broadcasts across the continent.

Approximately 31 million people tuned in live to CCTV-5 in China to watch their country beat South Korea 3-2 in the final, lifting a record ninth title.

An estimated 47 per cent of Chinese viewers were female and below the age of 35.

In South Korea, around 354,000 viewers tuned in for the final, adding to a total of 6.17 million unique views across the tournament on TVN.

Meanwhile, 22.47 million people in Vietnam watched the country's fixtures in India, at an average of 2.42 million per match.

The team made history by qualifying to the FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time.

The tournament is set to take place in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20 2023.
