Olympic champion Mete Gazoz of Turkey suffered a shock defeat to Britain's Tom Hall in the men's recurve round of 16 at the European Archery Indoor Championships in Laško.

Gazoz had eased through his first elimination match 7-1 against Portugal's Nuno Carneiro at the Tri Lilije Sports Hall in Slovenia, while Hall squeezed past Poland's Oskar Kasprowski 6-5 in a close contest.

However, the Briton outscored Gazoz in two sets and was level-pegging in the other two to triumph 6-2 and set up a quarter-final against Switzerland's Florian Faber tomorrow.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Mauro Nespol of Italy was the top performer in qualifying yesterday, and beat Portugal's Tiago Matos 7-3 and Swiss Thomas Rufer 6-4 to reach a last-eight tie against Frenchman Thomas Chirault.

Second-best qualifier Jean-Charles Valladont of France, the Rio 2016 silver medallist, required a shoot-off to beat Ukraine's Artem Ovchynnikov in the round of 16, with Alen Remar of Croatia awaiting in the quarter-finals.

There were also notable casualties in the women's recurve, with Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Lucilla Boari of Italy losing 6-4 to European outdoor champion Lisa Barbelin of France.

Barbelin will face Slovakia's Denisa Baránková, a bronze medallist at last year's outdoor European Championships, in the quarter-finals after she saw off the second-best qualifier in Moldova's Alexandra Mîrca 6-2.

The best performer from yesterday's qualification round also exited, with Ukraine's Polina Rodionova cruising through her first elimination match 6-0 against Slovenia's Ana Umer, only to lose in a shoot-off against Turkey's Gizem Özkan.

Reigning European Indoor men's compound champion Mike Schloesser of The Netherlands had no such difficulties, easing past Gummi Gudjonsson of Iceland 149-136 and then beating Portugal's Cláudio Alves 150-145.

Schloesser will face Turkey's Furkan Oruç in the quarter-finals.

The top eight qualifiers all reached the last eight with the exception of Denmark's Martin Damsbo, who lost 146-145 to Turkey's Demir Elmaağaçlı.

In the women's compound, Russia's Elizaveta Knyazeva, who impressed in qualifying yesterday, reached the quarter-finals with a 147-141 win against Ukraine's Viktoriia Kardash.

However, Belgium's Sarah Prieels and Estonia's Lisell Jaatma were beaten by two Estonian archers in Meeri-Marita Paas and Maris Tetsmann, respectively.

The top qualifiers excelled in the men's barebow eliminations, with Oliver Hicks of Britain seeing off Russia's Oleg Tsybikzhapov 6-2.

Of the top eight qualifiers, only Kelvisar Klemen of Slovenia was beaten before the quarter-finals as he went down 6-4 to Sweden's Viggo Axelsson.

The top three qualifiers in the women's recurve - Italians Cinzia Noziglia, Fabia Rovatti, Laura Turello - all made the last eight.

Quarter-finals are set to be held tomorrow, with eliminations beginning in the team competitions.
