This year's International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3x3 World Tour Final is set to return to Abu Dhabi for the first time since 2016.

The United Arab Emirates capital held the season finale event in back-to-back years in 2015 and 2016, and its Yas Island Resort is set to welcome the world's leading 3x3 basketball teams on December 9 and 10.

Since Abu Dhabi last hosted the World Tour Final, it has been staged in China's capital Beijing in 2017 and 2018, Utsunomiya in Japan in 2019 and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia for the last two years.

FIBA's head of 3x3 events Ignacio Soriano is hopeful that this year's Final will build on the success of previous editions in Abu Dhabi.

"Our previous Abu Dhabi Finals were a decisive moment in the growth of 3x3," Soriano claimed.

"We’re blessed to have found a partner in the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, which shares our vision of 3x3 events being more than a sporting event.

"We are looking forward to continuing this legacy by organising an unprecedented show this year in Abu Dhabi."

FIBA's secretary general Andreas Zagklis argued that the tournament returning to Abu Dhabi was testament to the development of 3x3 basketball, which made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020.

"Coming back for the Final six years later shows the spiking interest for 3x3 and the commitment of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council," Zagklis said.

Yas Island has previously hosted major sporting events including the final event of last year's Formula One Grand Prix circuit, where Dutch driver Max Verstappen dramatically overtook Briton Lewis Hamilton on the final lap to clinch the Championship.

The city staged a 3x3 World Tour Masters event last year, and Abu Dhabi Sports Council general secretary Aref Hamad Al Awani is looking forward to staging the Final again.

"It is an honour for us to host the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Final for the third time," Al Awani said.

"The event is beloved within our community and fits with our strategy to bring the best and most innovative sporting events in the world.

"We were delighted to see 3x3’s success at the Tokyo Olympics and are committed to continue growing the game together."

The calendar for the remainder of the World Tour season is due to be released later this month.

Serbian side Liman won the title for the first time in Jeddah last year at the expense of Russian team Gagarin.
