France stunned men's Olympic bronze medallists India to clinch a first victory of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Pro League season, earning a comfortable 5-2 win to avenge a midweek defeat against the same side.

India had hit five past the French without reply at the University of North West Astro in Potchefstroom in South Africa on Tuesday (February 8).

After a goalless first quarter today at the same venue, Victor Charlet put France, ranked number 13 in the world in front, only for Jarmanpreet Singh to level the scores.

Viktor Lockwood restored France's lead in the third quarter, with Charles Masson making it 3-1 in the fourth.

An action-packed finish to the game began when Singh halved the deficit with three minutes remaining, but Charlet had the French on the brink before Timothée Clément made sure of a 5-2 win as the clock struck 60 minutes.

South Africa had shipped double figures in their first two outings on home turf against The Netherlands and India.

Up against the Dutch again, they made this outing closer in terms of the scoreline, although the team placed second in the men's standings had too much for them.

Thijs van Dam broke the deadlock for the European champions at the end of the first quarter, with Thierry Brinkman doubling their advantage on 21 minutes.

Leneal Jackson pulled one back, but Dennis Warmerdam restored The Netherlands' two-goal cushion at the halfway stage.

Warmerdam made it 4-1 in the third quarter, before Tim Swaen and Tjep Hoedemakers got their names on the scoresheet.

Matthew de Sousa grabbed a consolation goal for South Africa to make it 6-2.

Olympic and reigning FIH Pro League champions Belgium continued their mixed start to the season against Argentina at the National Centre of High Performance Athletics in Buenos Aires.

Agustín Bugallo put the hosts in front after seven minutes, but Sébastien Dockier levelled three minutes later.

With three minutes remaining, the breakthrough came when Argentina were awarded a penalty stroke following a foul on Arthur De Sloover.

Maico Casella flicked the shot into the net to secure Argentina a first win over the Belgians since the Rio 2016 Olympics gold medal match.

In the women's Pro League, Tokyo 2020 runners-up Argentina marked their first match of the season with a 3-1 home win against Belgium in Buenos Aires.

Eugenia Trinchinetti put Argentina in front after 10 minutes, but this was quickly cancelled out by Alix Gerniers.

Penalties had seemed to be looming, but María José Granatto fired the hosts in front on 55 minutes, before Trinchinetti's second of the game put the contest beyond Belgium's reach.

Argentina are second at this early stage of the season, with Belgium fourth after two wins and three defeats from their opening five matches.
