Tanzania will hold a key pre-Commonwealth Games boxing tournament, with 14 African countries due to attend.

As well as the hosts, Commonwealth nations Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Cameroon are set to be represented at the Africa Zone Three Amateur Boxing Championships.

Burundi, Chad, Central Africa Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Sudan complete the line-up for the event from March 28 to April 4.

Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) secretary general Lukelo Wilillo has emphasised the event's capacity to act as a Commonwealth Games warm-up.

"BFT will test the amateur boxers before they are selected to compete in the event ahead of the Birmingham Games," Wilillo said, as reported by The Citizen.

"It is an opportunity for Tanzanian amateur boxers to gauge their skills before getting the chance to compete in the multi-sport event in UK."

Regarding the boxers competing, Wilillo added: "We expect to select the best amateur boxers in the country who, we think, they would represent the country well in both Africa’s Zone Three Championships and Commonwealth Games.

"Our main focus is to win medals in all events,"

Of the countries attending, only Uganda, Kenya and Cameroon have achieved medals in boxing in the previous three Commonwealth Games.

Uganda's Fazil Juma Kaggwa and Mike Sekabembe won bronzes in 2014 and Juma Miiro at the same level of success at Gold Coast four years later.

Kenya's Benson Gicharu Njangiru won bronze at Glasgow 2014 and Christine Ongare did the same at Gold Coast 2018.

Cameroon's Blaise Yepmou won a bronze medal in 2010 in Delhi and Wilfried Ntsengue secured a silver medal in 2018.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are scheduled for July 28 to August 8, with boxing competition starting the day before the Opening Ceremony on July 27.

The International Boxing Association (IBA) will be in charge of the tournament, but the Commonwealth Games Federation has told insidethegames its relationship with the under-fire IBA is "on an interim basis".
