Para snowboarders Lisa Bunschoten, 26, and Chris Vos, 23, have been chosen as The Netherlands’ Paralympic flag bearers, Chef de Mission Esther Vergeer has revealed.

Bunschoten is a two-time Paralympic medallist after she acquired bronze in the SB-LL2 banked slalom and silver in the SB-LL2 snowboard cross at Pyeongchang 2018.

Vos, on the other hand, won a silver medal in the SB-LL1 snowboard cross.

However, Vergeer’s decision to award the pair with the honour did not solely rely upon their success.

"Lisa and Chris are personalities who are committed to the future of the sport with all their hearts," she said.

"Lisa and Chris are an example for the current and future generation.

"I am therefore proud that they represent The Netherlands at the opening ceremony."

Bunschoten reaffirmed Vergeer’s judgement by acknowledging how significant their role is in the sport.

"We are happy to work together for the future of the sport," the Paralympian said.

"We think that is very important.

"It feels like a reward and is a huge honour that we can now carry the Dutch flag at the start of the Paralympic Games.

"It is very special to be able to do that together with Chris."

Vos, who is in a relationship with Bunschoten, referred to how being a flag bearer can provide greater motivation to perform at a high quality.

"It's very cool to be able to do this as two snowboarders for the Netherlands," he said.

"It motivates us extra to show what the two of us, just like the other Paralympic athletes, have worked hard for.

"We are going to have a blast in Beijing."

The couple replace Jetze Plat and Fleur Jong, who held the honour at the opening ceremony of Tokyo 2020.
