Al Jazira dominated AS Pirae in the first round of the FIFA Club World Cup on home soil in Abu Dhabi.

The Emirati club progressed to the second round following the 4-1 win over the club from Tahiti where they are due to meet Saudi Arabian outfit Al Hilal.

Zayed al-Ameri of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) scored first for Al Jazira after just five minutes at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in the capital.

His compatriot Ahmed Al Attas doubled the lead 20 minutes later as his side began to cruise.

Serbian defender Miloš Kosanović then put Al Jazira 3-0 up just before the half-time break.

An own goal from Morocco's Mohammed Rabii gave the French Polynesian team a glimpse of hope.

However, Mali's Abdoulay Diaby found the net with 63 minutes on the clock to put the game beyond doubt for the reigning UAE Pro League champions.

They are the first team from the UAE to compete in a second Club World Cup and achieved qualification as a result of the country hosting the tournament.

New Zealand side Auckland City were originally supposed to represent the Oceania Football Confederation, but pulled out due to the country's stringent COVID-19 border restrictions.

AS Pirae replaced them as consecutive national title winners.

The tournament takes a break tomorrow but is due to return on Saturday (February 5) as Egyptian champions Al Ahly take on Mexico's Monterrey in the second round with the match being played at the Al Nahyan Stadium.
