Fazil, who serves as vice-president of the Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee (COA), met Cuban Olympic Committee President Roberto Léon Richards Aguiar to mark the development of strengthening ties between the two organisations.

The COA official visited sports facilities and the anti-doping laboratory in the Cuban capital, and examined potential opportunities for collaboration in the sports of athletics, boxing, judo, rowing and wrestling.

Fazil also visited the Algerian embassy in Cuba, where he was met by officials including from the Government.

Cuban publication JIT reported that Algeria holding training camps in Cuba in the build-up to this year's Mediterranean Games was one of the topics discussed during his visit.

Algeria is set to host the Games in Oran from June 25 until July 5.

"We are interested in the continuous training of coaches, in closer collaboration between the National federations of both nations and in our athletes participating in championships and bases based in Cuba in view of their participation in the XIX Mediterranean Games in Oran 2022," Fazil was quoted as saying by JIT.

Richards Aguiar added: "The aspects taken into account go from the agreement that we signed at the beginning of 2020 with the then President of the Algerian Olympic Committee.

"They have the decision to continue and expand cooperation with the Island in boxing, judo, wrestling, athletics, rowing and canoeing.

"They plan to incorporate their athletes with a view to preparing for the Mediterranean Games in Oran 2022."

The nations have historically enjoyed strong diplomatic relations.

Algeria failed to win a medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics for the first time since Athens 2004, while Cuba collected 15, including seven golds, in the Japanese capital.
